10 Packing Tips for a Faster, Less Stressful Move
Every move feels the same at first: a mountain of stuff, not enough time, and the creeping suspicion you're forgetting something important. After helping pack up more homes than we can count, here's what actually makes a difference — the small habits that save you hours later, not just today.
1. Pack one room at a time, fully
It's tempting to grab a box and wander the house filling it with whatever's nearby. Resist it. Half-packed rooms are confusing and slow you down. Finish the bathroom before you touch the bedroom.
2. Label by room, not by contents
"Kitchen" is more useful on moving day than "misc." Movers (including future-you) just need to know where a box goes, not exactly what's inside it.
3. Pack a first-night box separately
Toiletries, phone chargers, a change of clothes, coffee filters, toilet paper. Keep it with you, not in the truck. You will thank yourself at 9pm on move-in day.
4. Heavy items in small containers, light items in big ones
Books in a giant box become nearly impossible to lift. Keep heavy items in smaller crates or boxes and use the bigger containers for pillows, linens, and lampshades.
5. Wrap fragile items in soft goods you're already packing
Towels, t-shirts, and blankets make free padding. Wrap plates and glasses in them instead of buying extra bubble wrap — you're packing those items anyway.
6. Take photos before you unplug electronics
A quick photo of the cable setup behind your TV or router saves twenty minutes of guessing later.
7. Use uniform, stackable containers when you can
Mismatched box sizes waste truck space and topple easily. Uniform containers — like rental crates — stack cleanly and protect what's inside better than a tower of odd-sized boxes.
8. Don't save the closets for last
Closets always take longer than expected. Start them early, even if it's just a little at a time.
9. Keep a "do not pack" pile in plain sight
Set aside anything that needs to stay accessible (medications, important documents, chargers) somewhere obvious, so it doesn't accidentally end up sealed in a box.
10. Recruit help earlier than you think you need to
Whether it's friends, family, or professional movers, book help before the week of your move, not the day before. The good ones get booked up fast.
Skip the cardboard entirely and pack with sturdy, stackable crates instead.
